U.S. stock market indexes were mixed in Tuesday's midday trading as concerns about Europe's debt crisis weighed on investors.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose three-tenths of a percent. The S&P 500 gained less than one-tenth of a percent. And the NASDAQ slipped four-tenths of a percent.
European stock markets closed lower. London's Financial Times 100 index dipped 1 percent to end at 5,869. The CAC-40 in Paris fell almost 1 percent to close at 3,771. And the DAX in Frankfurt dropped eight-tenths of a percent to finish at 7,174.
Earlier in Asia, Tokyo's Nikkei index dropped 1.4 percent to finish at 9,926. Hong Kong's Hang Seng index plunged 3 percent to finish the day's trading at 21,663.
The price of gold fell less than $1 to trade at $1,553.22 an ounce.
The dollar was lower against the yen but higher versus the euro.
