Police in India's financial capital, Mumbai, say a series of blasts have killed at least three people and wounded dozens of others.

The special secretary for internal security, UK Bansal, said Mumbai is on high alert and that forensic teams are en route after three explosions hit crowded areas of the city late Wednesday. He said it appeared to be a terrorist attack “intended to cause casualties.”

Police say two of the explosions occurred in the south of the city, near the popular Opera House and famed jewelry market Zaveri Bazaar. The other blast hit the crowded Dadar neighborhood in the center of the city.

Local television showed debris scattered at one explosion site and medical teams treating a number of injured people elsewhere.

Mumbai is no stranger to attacks. In 2008, Pakistan-based militants laid siege to the city, killing 166 people. Domestic militant groups also are active in the country and have carried attacks in large cities.
