European Stocks Lower in Midday Trading

European stock prices are lower in midday trading Thursday.

London's Financial Times index is down one percent. The CAC-40 in Paris is down 1.1 percent, and the DAX index in Frankfurt is down eight-tenths of a percent.

In New York, the S&P futures contract is up more than three points, indicating a higher opening.

Tokyo's Nikkei index lost nearly three-tenths of one percent to finish at 9,936.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng index gained nearly one-tenth of one percent to finish the day's trading at 21,940.

Gold is trading at $1,591.71 an ounce.

The dollar is mixed in trading against other major currencies.
