US TV’s ‘Mildred Pierce,’ ‘Mad Men’ Get Most Emmy Nominations

U.S. Depression-era miniseries Mildred Pierce and 1960s advertising drama Mad Men have nabbed the most nominations for this year's Emmy Awards honoring the best in American primetime television.

HBO's Mildred Pierce earned 21 nods for the 63rd annual ceremony, while AMC's Mad Men secured 19, including in the categories of best drama series, lead actor and lead actress .

The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences announced the nominees on Thursday.

Other top contenders include HBO's prohibition era series Boardwalk Empire, with a total of 18 nods including best drama.

ABC's Modern Family, which won best comedy series last year, received 17 nominations, including nods for several of its stars .

The Emmys will be presented in Los Angeles on September 18. Jane Lynch, one of the stars of FOX's hit musical series Glee and a nominee for best supporting actress, will host the ceremony.

The Emmy Awards are the U.S. television industry's highest honors. Several different ceremonies are held each year, including those focused on primetime television, daytime television, college and regional programs.

Other contenders this year for best primetime drama series include HBO's book series-based fantasy show Game of Thrones. The Showtime serial killer saga Dexter and NBC's high school football drama Friday Night Lights also were nominated. Rounding out the list is CBS series The Good Wife, about a woman moving past her politician husband's sex and corruption scandal.

In the comedy category, Modern Family is vying to defend its best series win from last year against Glee, 30 Rock, Parks and Recreation, The Big Bang Theory and The Office.
