An Egyptian ruling military council member cut short his visit to Cairo's Tahrir Square on Saturday after he was heckled by demonstrators.

Witnesses say chanting protesters drowned out General Tareq al-Mahdi as he tried to address the group.

The Associated Press quotes one witness who said some activists booed the official and raised their shoes at him in protest.

Demonstrators have camped out for more than a week in the square, which was the epicenter of protests that led to former President Hosni Mubarak's resignation in February. They have called for swifter justice for Mubarak-era officials linked to violence and corruption.

Also Saturday, Prime Minister Essam Sharaf accepted the resignation of his foreign minister , who was among the ministers seen as too close to the ousted regime.

Sharaf is expected to announce his new Cabinet by Monday.
