Asian stock markets closed mixed Tuesday.

Tokyo's Nikkei index lost nearly one percent to finish at 9,890.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng index gained nearly one-half of one percent to finish the day's trading at 21,902.

Share prices were higher in Manila and Wellington, but lower in Sydney, Taipei and Shanghai.

In currency trading, the dollar was selling at 79.02 yen, a loss of a fraction of a yen from Monday.
