A jailed former member of Britain's House of Lords has lost an appeal of his conviction for expense account fraud.
The Court of Appeal Wednesday rejected the bid by Lord Hanningfield, a former Tory peer and leader of the Essex County Council, to overturn his conviction. The court ruled his trial had been conducted properly.
The 70-year-old Lord Hanningfield was appealing his conviction on six counts of falsely claiming more than $22,000 for overnight stays in London when he was not in the British capital. The former pig farmer was sent back to jail to complete his nine-month sentence.
Lord Hanningfield is the sixth lawmaker imprisoned as part of Britain's parliamentary expenses scandal, which showed that some MP's were routinely claiming reimbursements for expenses they had not incurred or for items not approved for reimbursement.
