A wild leopard has mauled at least six people in West Bengal, India, and died of knife wounds after being captured.

One person was reported critically injured in the attack.

The leopard wandered into the remote village of Prakash Nagar Tuesday and attacked several people in the densely populated settlement.

When wildlife authorities tried to tranquilize the big cat, it also attacked them. They beat the animal back with sticks and knives. It was eventually captured and taken to a veterinary center, but later died of its wounds.

Authorities believe the leopard entered the village from a nearby national park.
