Caribbean officials have called for an immediate halt to a British shipment of radioactive nuclear waste that is due to pass through the Caribbean on its way to Japan.
The Caribbean Community, or CARICOM, has condemned as “unacceptable and injurious” the practice by Britain, France and Japan to transport hazardous waste through the Caribbean Sea.
CARICOM said the practice risks the lives of the many people in the region, calling it “intolerable.”
The 15-nation bloc has long objected to the shipments of hazardous waste through the Caribbean, and has urged all countries involved to stop them immediately.
