Japanese markets closed slightly higher Thursday, while the U.S. dollar is higher against the Japanese yen.

Tokyo's Nikkei index gained a fraction of one percent to finish at 10,010.

In currency trading, the dollar was selling at 78.86 yen, a gain of less than one tenth of a yen from Wednesday.

Gold is trading at $1,599.95 an ounce.
