A U.S. jury has found the father of an admitted terrorist who plotted to bomb the New York City subway system guilty of lying to investigators and hiding evidence in the case of his son.
Afghan-born U.S. citizen Mohammed Zazi was convicted Friday of both counts against him — obstruction of justice and conspiracy. The jury issued its verdict on the second day of deliberations.
Prosecutors at the U.S. District Court in New York state say Zazi thwarted an investigation by the FBI by lying and destroying chemicals and other evidence used by his son, Najibullah Zazi. The elder Zazi, who denied the charges, will be sentenced in December.
The younger Zazi pleaded guilty in February to the 2009 subway plot. He also is awaiting sentencing.
