Democratic U.S. Congressman Luis Gutierrez was arrested Tuesday in front of the White House while protesting U.S. immigration policies.
A spokesman for the congressman said Representative Gutierrez and several others sat on the sidewalk near the White House and refused to leave when directed by police. U.S. Park Police charged the congressman with disobeying an official order. He was released after paying a $100 fine.
In May 2010, Gutierrez was arrested at another White House immigration policy protest.
The 10-term congressman from the midwestern U.S. state of Illinois has worked on immigration issues including the DREAM Act which would give a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants brought to the United States as children.
Gutierrez was the first Latino elected to Congress from the Midwest.
