Police in Australia are investigating the country's first suspected case of organ trafficking.

The Sydney Morning Herald newspaper reported Thursday that an elderly Sydney woman suffering from a kidney disease is suspected of flying in a younger woman from the Philippines with the intent of harvesting an organ from her.

The newspaper said that routine screening interviews at a Sydney hospital where the procedure was to take place revealed that the younger woman had not fully consented to the plan.

The federal police conducted a search at a home in New South Wales in March, but no arrests have been made.

The Herald quoted the Minister for Justice as saying that no more details could be revealed because the investigation is continuing.

Global shortage of organ donors has been fueling the illegal trafficking of human body parts, with traffickers commonly coercing impoverished and vulnerable victims to give up their organs.
