Authorities in Mexico say at least 15 bodies have been found in a hidden grave in the northern part of the country.

Officials Wednesday said the grave is located in a town near the industrial city of Monterrey, which is the capital of the state of Nuevo Leon. Monterrey has been the scene of deadly battles involving drug cartels fighting over routes into the United States.

Mass graves also were discovered earlier this year in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas, east of Nuevo Leon, as well as in the state of Guerrero, which is on Mexico's Pacific coast.

Elsewhere, authorities say nine people were killed in suspected drug violence in Michoacan, President Felipe Calderon's home state. Michoacan neighbors Guerrero.

More than 37,000 people have been killed in drug-related violence in Mexico since President Calderon took office nearly five years ago and began cracking down on the nation's cartels.
