U.S. weather forecasters say Tropical Storm Don has formed over the southern Gulf of Mexico and is expected to strengthen this week, though not likely into a hurricane.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami says in its latest advisory Wednesday that the weather system is about 190 kilometers north of Cozumel, Mexico, and 1,220 kilometers east-southeast of Corpus Christi, Texas. The storm is moving toward the west-northwest with winds of 65 kilometers per hour.

Forecasters expect the storm to approach the coast of the northwestern Gulf of Mexico on Friday and say interests in that area should monitor Don's progress. They say watches and/or warnings may be required for portions of the Texas coast.
