The Gulf city of Dubai decided Friday to pass on bidding for the 2020 Olympics and will concentrate on a possible run for the 2024 games.
The National Olympic Committee of the United Arab Emirates said a feasibility study found that while 70 percent of the infrastructure is in place for 2020, “a bid would be better timed for 2024.''
Dubai has been rocked by economic crisis in recent years. It often uses sports events including swimming, golf, cricket and football as a draw for tourists.
Planning began for a possible Olympic bid in 2009.
Madrid, Rome and Tokyo say they will enter bids for 2020. The deadline is Sept. 1.
