US Stocks Mixed in Midday Trading

U.S. stock indexes were mixed in Friday's midday trading.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was off four-tenths of a percent, the Standard & Poor's 500 index fell two-tenths of a percent while the NASDAQ gained one-tenth of a percent.

European stock markets were lower at the close of trading.

London's Financial Times 100 index fell one percent to close at 5,815. The CAC-40 in Paris is off 1.1 percent to end at 3,673 and the DAX in Frankfurt by four-tenths of a percent to hit 7,159.

In Asia, Tokyo's Nikkei index lost seven-tenths of a percent , to close at 9,833. Hong Kong's Hang Seng index dropped six-tenths of a percent , to end at 22,440.

Gold advanced nearly $11 to trade at $1,626.92 an ounce.

The U.S. dollar was lower against the yen and the euro.
