A provincial governor in eastern Afghanistan says a NATO airstrike has killed four police officers and wounded two more.

Jamaluddin Badar said Monday that another 12 police were detained after the strike.

Badar condemned the attack and the arrests at the police post in the Wama district of the Nuristan province bordering Pakistan.

He said the strike was based on wrong intelligence. He said the officers were wearing police uniforms and an Afghan flag was flying at the post when it was attacked.

NATO says it is “aware” of the statements by Afghan officials in Nuristan alleging friendly fire. The international coalition says it is investigating the incident.
