U.S. stock market indexes rose strongly in Monday's early trading. The Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 rose 1 percent and the NASDAQ gained 1.4 percent.
European stock markets were mixed in afternoon trading. London's Financial Times 100 index gained 1.1 percent, the CAC-40 in Paris moved up one-tenth of a percent, while the DAX in Frankfurt lost one-tenth of a percent.
Earlier in Asia, Tokyo's Nikkei index jumped 1.3 percent to close at 9,965. Hong Kong's Hang Seng index climbed 1 percent to end at 22,663.
The price of gold fell more than $11 to trade at $1,616.02 an ounce.
The dollar was lower against the yen but made gains compared to the euro.
