Mexican authorities confirmed Tuesday that the director of a prison in Ciudad Juarez and four guards at the facility have been taken into custody in connection with a July 25 fight that resulted in the death of 17 inmates.
Chihuahua state officials said in a statement Tuesday that state prison director Lucio Cuevas is accused of giving privileges to some inmates. The four guards are accused of covering up for inmates and corrupting minors.
The Associated Press reports that a surveillance video shows two inmates opening doors to allow armed prisoners into a room where the slain victims were reportedly holding a party.
