NATO officials say one of the alliance's helicopters has crashed in eastern Afghanistan. Coalition authorities say “recovery operations” are underway, but did not release any casualty figures from the early Saturday crash.
NATO says initial reports indicate there was “enemy activity” in the area of the crash.
The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the downing of the helicopter in an exchange of gunfire between the militants and NATO service members. The Taliban says the helicopter crew was killed in the attack and eight of its fighters were also killed.
An Afghan provincial spokesman said the helicopter crashed during an anti-Taliban operation in the Sayd Abad district of Wardak province.
