Authorities in Aruba have detained a U.S. tourist for questioning in connection with the disappearance of an American woman who traveled with him to the Caribbean island.

Investigators say 35-year-old Robyn Gardner of Maryland was last seen August 2. They say her travel companion, 50-year-old Gary Giordano, told them he and Gardner went snorkeling but that she never made it back to shore.

Aruba's solicitor general, Taco Stein, tells the Associated Press that authorities decided Giordano could not leave the island because of inconsistencies in his story.

In May 2005, 18-year-old American teenager Natalee Holloway disappeared while on a high school graduation trip to Aruba. Her remains have never been found, despite a massive and highly publicized search.

The main suspect in the case, Joran van der Sloot, is jailed in Peru on charges of killing a 21-year-old woman in that country back in 2010.
