British police say a man arrested in connection with the phone-hacking scandal at the now-defunct News of the World newspaper has been released on bail.

Greg Miskiw, a former senior editor for the newspaper, was released Thursday until a court date in October. He was the 12th person arrested as part of the investigation into the scandal.

Police had arrested the 61-year-old Miskiw Wednesday on suspicion of conspiracy to intercept communications.

Miskiw, who had been living in Florida, says he voluntarily returned to Britain to speak with police.

Among others arrested in connection with the scandal are former News of the World editors Rebekah Brooks and Andy Coulson, who went on to head communications for British Prime Minister David Cameron before resigning in January.

News of the World shut down last month following allegations that journalists illegally accessed the cellphone voicemails of hundreds of celebrities, politicians, rival journalists and even murder victims. Employees of the newspaper also are suspected of bribing police for information.

The British tabloid was one of several news and entertainment outlets that were part of media mogul Rupert Murdoch's worldwide media conglomerate, News Corporation.
