Pakistani police say assailants have kidnapped a U.S. citizen from his residence in the eastern city of Lahore.

Pakistani police say as many as eight to ten armed men overpowered guards and took the American early Saturday. They say the kidnapped man works for a private company.

U.S. embassy officials say they are aware of the reported kidnapping and are looking into it.

Kidnappings for ransom are fairly common in Pakistan, although foreigners are not usually targets. Pakistani Taliban militants say they kidnapped a Swiss couple earlier this year in the southwest of the country.

Anti-U.S. sentiments run high in Pakistan. Tensions increased between Islamabad and Washington after the May 2 killing of al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden in a U.S. raid in Pakistan.
