Officials in central Afghanistan say at least 16 people have been killed and more than two dozen injured after at least six suicide bombers attacked the compound of a provincial governor.

Parwan Governor Abdul Basir Salangi confirmed the deaths, when speaking with a television news outlet from inside the compound.

The victims have been described as government employees and police.

Authorities say several blasts have been heard since the insurgents began their attack Sunday.

Parwan is about 50 kilometers north of Afghanistan's capital, Kabul.
