US Stocks Mixed in Midday Trading Wednesday

U.S. stock indexes were mixed in midday trading Wednesday.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average of 30 key stocks is off one-tenth of a percent, while the broader S & P 500 index is ahead by the same amount. The technology-laden NASDAQ is off six-tenths of a percent.

European stock indexes ended mixed.

London's Financial Times index closed down one-half of one percent to end at 5,332. The CAC-40 in Paris finished up seven-tenths of a percent to close at 3,254. The DAX index in Frankfurt lost eight-tenths of a percent to end the day's trading at 5,949.

In Asia, Tokyo's Nikkei index lost just over one-half of one percent to finish at 9,057.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng index gained nearly four-tenths of one percent to finish the day's trading at 20,289.

Gold is trading down 65 cents at 1,784.90 an ounce.

The dollar is trading lower against both the yen and euro.
