United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki Moon has welcomed steps toward dialogue by the Malawian government and civil society organizations following last month's deadly violence.
A statement issued by Mr. Ban's spokesman Wednesday said he is encouraged by the signing of a joint statement by the two sides in a U.N. facilitated meeting. Mr. Ban called on both sides to continue efforts to create a political and social atmosphere where challenges facing the country can be addressed.
Last month, 19 people were killed during clashes between anti-government demonstrators and security forces. The demonstrators were protesting fuel shortages, rising prices and eroding civil liberties.
