Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan visited refugees in the Somali capital of Mogadishu on Friday, bringing aid and international attention to the famine-stricken country.

Mr. Erdogan arrived Friday with family members and Cabinet ministers for the one-day trip to witness the devastation caused by the Horn of Africa's worst drought in six decades.

The United Nations has declared a famine in five areas of Somalia, including Mogadishu.

Prime Minister Erdogan toured two refugees camps and a hospital, handing out food and other aid.

Earlier this week, Mr. Erdogan appealed for Muslim nations to pledge more money to help combat the famine in Somalia. After a meeting in Turkey of the 57-member Organization of Islamic Cooperation, Prime Minister Erdogan announced the nations had pledged $350 million in aid.

In Somalia, where the situation is the most dire, the U.N. says as many as 3.2 million people are estimated to be on the brink of starvation.

The U.N. has said that overall in the Horn of Africa, more than 12 million people need food aid.
