Tropical Storm Harvey is headed to Central America and could lash Honduras with strong winds and heavy rainfall before moving inland over Belize.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Saturday the storm is packing maximum sustained winds of 95 kilometers an hour and could intensify into a hurricane along a portion of the Belize coast. At mid-Saturday morning, it was centered 100 kilometers southeast of Belize City and headed west at 19 kilometers an hour.
Forecasters said that after Harvey hits Belize, it is likely to move into northern Guatemala.
The Miami-based hurricane center said the storm could drop 7 to 15 centimeters of rain across Honduras, Belize, Guatemala and the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico, with possible isolated amounts up to 25 centimeters. The forecasters said the heavier amounts could produce life-threatening flash floods and mudslides, particularly in higher elevations.
