U.S. President Barack Obama says the regime of Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi is coming to an end.

The president Monday called on Mr. Gadhafi to relinquish power. He said the situation in the North African country is very fluid and uncertain, and that the Gadhafi regime has unraveled.

President Obama said there is still fierce fighting in the country, but it is clear the rule of Mr. Gadhafi is over, after rebels moved in to control most of the capital, Tripoli.

Mr. Obama said the situation in Libya has reached a tipping point, and that the future of the country is now in the hands of the Libyan people.

The president spoke from the island resort of Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts, where he is on vacation with his family.

In Tripoli Monday, shooting continued as pockets of fighters loyal to the Libyan leader were holding out in parts of the city.
