British authorities have indicted a 30-year-old Polish man for the murders of six people on the British Channel Island of Jersey earlier this month.

Damian Rzeszowski appeared at the island's Royal Court Friday, charged with stabbing to death three adults and three children. The victims included his wife and two children and his wife's father. The other two were a family friend and her child. All of the victims are believed to have been Polish immigrants.

Investigators waited several weeks to question Rzeszowski. He had been recovering in a hospital from what witnesses said were self-inflicted knife wounds.

Violent crime is rare on the island of Jersey, which is a tax haven and a holiday destination, located off the coast of northern France.
