British police are on high alert for the upcoming Notting Hill Carnival in London, which attracts hundreds of thousands of people, amid fears of violence following tis month's devastating riots.

Officials say some 16,000 officers are being to deployed to keep the event peaceful.

The stepped up security follows several days of riots across London and some other British cities earlier this month that resulted in 2,000 arrests and left five people dead.
