Asian Markets Close Higher

Asian stock markets closed higher Monday.

Tokyo's Nikkei index rose six-tenths of a percent to close at 8,851.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng index climbed 1.5 percent to end at 19,871.

Elsewhere, share prices were higher in Taipei, Kuala Lumpur, Wellington, Seoul, Sydney, Singapore, Mumbai and Bangkok. Shanghai stocks closed lower. Markets in Jakarta and Manila were closed for national holidays.

The U.S. dollar was quoted at 76.62 yen, nearly unchanged from late Friday.

Gold was trading at $1,817.90 an ounce.
