Tokyo's Nikkei index rose six-tenths of a percent to close at 8,851.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng index climbed 1.5 percent to end at 19,871.

Elsewhere, share prices were higher in Sydney, Wellington and Taipei, while stocks ended lower in Shanghai. Manila markets were closed for a holiday .

The dollar was selling at 76.65 yen in currency trading, unchanged from late Friday.
