US Stocks Rise

U.S. stock market indexes rose in Monday's early trading.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average, the S&P 500 and the NASDAQ all gained around 1.5 percent.

European stock markets were up strongly in afternoon trading. The CAC 40 in Paris moved up 2.2 percent, and the DAX in Frankfurt jumped 2 percent. London's Financial Times 100 index was closed for a holiday.

Earlier Monday in Asia, Tokyo's Nikkei index rose six-tenths of a percent to close at 8,851. Hong Kong's Hang Seng index climbed 1.4 percent to end at 19,865.

The price of gold fell more than $34 to trade at $1,793.00 an ounce.

The dollar was higher against the yen but lost value compared to the euro.
