US Stocks Advance in Midday Trading Tuesday

U.S. stock market indexes advanced in midday trading Tuesday.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 index are both ahead by more than a tenth of one percent, while the NASDAQ is up six-tenths of a percent.

European stock markets closed mixed.

London's Financial Times 100 index gained 2.7 percent to end at 5,269. The CAC-40 in Paris advanced two-tenths of a percent to finish at 3,160, while the DAX in Frankfurt slid one-half of one percent to close at 5,644.

Earlier in Asia, Tokyo's Nikkei index gained 1.2 percent to finish at 8,954. Hong Kong's Hang Seng index soared 1.7 percent to finish the day's trading at 20,204.

The price of gold rose nearly $34 to trade at $1,822.21 an ounce.

The dollar was lower against the yen but made gains compared to the euro.
