South Africa's ruling African National Congress said Friday it is not dropping disciplinary charges against its Youth League leader Julius Malema.

Malema had sought to have the charges dropped. He is accused of sowing dissension within the ANC by undermining President Jacob Zuma and calling for the overthrow of the leader of neighboring Botswana. Malema has also called for the nationalization of mines and white-owned farms.

Analysts say the youth leader's case has become a showdown between President Zuma and Malema, pitting radicals against moderates in the ruling party.

If Malema is found guilty in his second disciplinary hearing in about 12 months, he could be suspended from the ruling party.

His hearing will resume Monday. Five other Youth League leaders will also face the disciplinary committee next week.
