Japanese share prices plunged Monday, while the dollar rose against the yen.

Tokyo’s Nikkei index dropped nearly two percent , to close at 8,784.

In currency trading, the dollar was selling at 76.84 yen, up a fraction from late Friday.

Gold was trading at $1899.65 an ounce.
