Police in western Iraq say gunmen have ambushed a military patrol, killing eight Iraqi soldiers in an area between Haditha and Baiji.

Authorities said the gunmen shot the soldiers early Tuesday, then burned their bodies by setting a military vehicle on fire.

Violence in Iraq is down from its peak in 2006 and 2007, but Iraqi police and military continue to be the target of attacks as U.S. forces prepare to leave the country by the end of the year.

U.S. and Iraqi officials are discussing the possibility of keeping some U.S. troops in the country after the deadline to continue training Iraqi security personnel, amid concerns about Iraq's ability to handle security.
