Israeli warplanes have launched an airstrike on the central Gaza Strip in what the military says is a response to rockets fired from the Hamas-controlled territory.

The Israeli military said Tuesday the overnight bombing targeted a weapons manufacturing site.

The Palestinian Ma'an News Agency said the airstrike caused a fire, but no injuries were reported.

Israeli forces routinely respond to rocket fire from Gaza with airstrikes, including raids last month that Palestinians say killed 10 people.

The United States and the European Union consider Hamas to be a terrorist organization.
