NATO's coalition in Afghanistan has stopped handing over prisoners to some Afghan jails following allegations of torture in an upcoming United Nations report.
Coalition officials said Wednesday they are proceeding with “appropriate caution” until they can verify the expected findings in the pending U.N. report, which is expected to be released soon.
Authorities reportedly are focused on at least eight Afghan jails where alleged incidents of torture have occurred.
Some analysts fear that these torture concerns will bring into question how ready Afghans are to take the lead in security operations from the coalition forces.
NATO is in the first phase of handing security over to Afghanistan's army and police in a gradual process due to be completed in approximately three years.
