U.S. stocks closed lower Thursday, reflecting investor disappointment that Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke failed to announce any new plans to boost the economy.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 119 points — 1 percent — to 11,296. The Standard and Poors was also down 13 points — 1 percent — to 1,186 and the NASDAQ was off 20 points to 2,529.
European stocks ended the day higher.
London's Financial Times 100 index was up 22 points to close at 5,340 and the CAC 40 in Paris was 13 points higher to 3,086. Frankfurt's DAX was up 3 points to 5,408.
New York gold rose $40.20 to $1854.40 an ounce.
The dollar was higher against the yen and the euro.
