European Stocks Lower in Midday Trading

European stock prices are lower in midday trading Friday.

London's Financial Times index is down three-quarters of one percent. The CAC-40 in Paris is down nearly one and one-half percent, and trading on the DAX index in Frankfurt is down nearly one and one-quarter percent.

In New York, the S&P futures contract is down five points, indicating a lower opening.

Tokyo's Nikkei index lost over one-half of one percent to finish at 8,738.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng index fell nearly one-quarter of one percent to finish the day's trading at 19,867.

Gold is trading at $1,833.42 an ounce.

The dollar is trading higher against other major currencies.
