Japanese markets closed lower Friday, while the U.S. dollar is virtually unchanged in trading against the Japanese yen.

Tokyo's Nikkei index lost over one-half of one percent to finish at 8,738.

The dollar was selling at 77.50 yen, a loss of a fraction of a yen from Thursday.

The Taipei market finished at 7,611, a gain of nearly one percent .
