U.S. authorities have charged a 27-year-old Albanian citizen with providing material support to terrorists. They say the case is not connected with what officials are calling a “credible but unconfirmed” threat against the United States coinciding with the 10th anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks.

Authorities say Agron Hasbajrami, who was arraigned Friday, had sent more than $1,000 to a contact in Pakistan to fund terrorist activities abroad.

Hasbajrami was arrested Tuesday at a New York City airport, where he was preparing to board a one-way flight to Turkey. He was traveling with a tent, boots and cold-weather gear.

After his arrest, investigators found several handwritten notes at his home. One said “Do not wait for invasion, the time is martyrdom time.”

If convicted, Hasbajrami faces up to 15 years in prison.

Hasbajrami had been living legally in the United States since 2008.
