An animal rights group is urging authorities in the Philippines to release what is believed to the world's largest crocodile in captivity.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals said Saturday that if the 6-meter saltwater crocodile remains in captivity at a park in Agusan del Sur province, it will develop abnormal and self-destructive behavior, and endanger its keepers and visitors. It was captured last Saturday.

But the mayor of Bunawan township says the crocodile would be a danger to his constituents, who rely on fishing in nearby marshlands.
