Kenya's finance minister says a deal has been reached with the teachers' union to end a week-long strike.

Uhuru Kenyatta said Friday's agreement calls for 18,000 teachers to receive permanent jobs next month with an additional 5,000 joining the workforce in January.

An estimated 200,000 members of the the Kenya National Union of Teachers went on strike Tuesday, demanding that 28,000 teachers be hired permanently.

The government announced the agreement Friday evening after multiple meetings this week with union representatives.

The Daily Nation newspaper quotes Union Chairman Wilson Sossion as saying the deal was agreeable and the strike would officially end following a meeting of the National Executive Committee Sunday.

The week-long strike put the education of 10 million of students on hold, including some preparing for national exams in November.
