Residents of an Indian enclave within Bangladesh are holding a two-day protest to demand the speedy implementation of a deal between the two countries that will grant them citizenship.

Thousands of people in Bangladesh's Panchagarh district walked through the streets in protest Saturday night and refused to turn on the lights of their homes.

Demonstrators are calling on authorities to quickly implement a recently signed agreement between India and Bangladesh giving Bangladeshi citizenship to the thousands of people living in India's 111 enclaves within the country.

Organizers say the demonstration will continue throughout Sunday.

The centuries-old partitions predated the partition of the Indian subcontinent in 1947 and Bangladesh's independence from Pakistan in 1971.
