Asian stock markets closed lower across the board Monday.
Tokyo's Nikkei index dropped 2.3 percent to close at 8,536.
Hong Kong's Hang Seng index plunged 4.2 percent to end at 19,031.
Elsewhere, share prices closed lower in Sydney, Mumbai, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Jakarta, Wellington and Manila. Markets in Shanghai, Taipei and Seoul were closed for the Mid-Autumn Festival.
The U.S. dollar was quoted at 77.05 yen, down six-tenths of a yen from late Friday.
Gold was trading at $1,839.30 an ounce.
