The lawyer for the family of an Iraqi man beaten to death while in British Army custody in 2003 says he wants those responsible charged with murder and war crimes.
Attorney Phil Shiner said Tuesday he is forwarding the case to the British Director of Public Prosecutions. He said justice for Baha Mousa and his family obviously requires that a large number of soldiers and commanders be held criminally responsible.
British soldiers looking for weapons in the Iraqi city of Basra in 2003 arrested Mousa, a hotel receptionist, and nine other men. His body had dozens of wounds apparently caused by torture.
After a three-year long investigation, a British report into the death concluded last week that Mousa was the victim of an “appalling episode of serious gratuitous violence.” It said numerous soldiers were involved and that those who took no direct part showed a lack of moral courage for failing to report what they knew.
